319 area code Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and the southeast.
Area code 319 serves the southeastern and east-central part of Iowa, covering cities that include Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Burlington, and Fort Madison. The code was once larger; a geographic split in 2001 gave northeastern Iowa its own code, 563, and left 319 with the cities it holds today. Here is where it reaches, what that split means for you, and how a small team gets a 319 number without an Iowa address.

Got a call from a 319 number? A 319 number was issued to a line in southeastern or east-central Iowa, but the caller could be anywhere; mobile and internet-based numbers travel with their owner. Area code 319 once covered all of eastern Iowa until a 2001 split created 563 for the northeastern portion, so a 319 number places the original line in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, or southern river-city region. If the call came from a business, the number started its life somewhere in that part of the state.
The history
319 and 563: eastern Iowa, divided in 2001.
When the first nationwide numbering plan took effect in 1947, Iowa was divided into three numbering plan areas, and area code 319 was assigned to the entire eastern portion of the state, stretching along the full border with Wisconsin and Illinois. By the late 1990s, the available number pool was running low because of growth in mobile devices, fax machines, and other services. In late 2000, administrators announced that a new code, 563, would take over northeastern Iowa, covering cities including Davenport, Dubuque, Decorah, and Bettendorf. The geographic split became operational in March 2001, with new dialing procedures mandatory as of December 2001.
Prior to October 2021, seven-digit dialing still worked within area code 319. That changed because the number 988 was designated in 2020 as a nationwide code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, creating a conflict for any exchange that allowed seven-digit dialing with a 988 prefix. Area code 319 moved to mandatory ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021, so every call in or out of the code now requires the full area code.

What a 319 number does for a small team
A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person HVAC team working out of Cedar Rapids, with one 319 number on the truck and the website.
- 7:30 am
A customer calls about a furnace inspection; all three phones ring at the same time in the app, whether the tech is at the shop, in the truck, or at home.
- 10:30 am
Two technicians are on jobs; a new call joins a short queue with hold music and the first free person picks it up.
- 10:45 am
A voicemail arrives by email with a recording and a transcript: 'Need a quote for Iowa City shop.'
- 5:00 pm
The schedule flips to after hours, an emergency option forwards urgent calls to the owner's cell, and holidays already on the calendar route to voicemail automatically.
- Any time
Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions
319 area code, answered
Where is the 319 area code?
Area code 319 covers the southeastern and east-central part of Iowa. Major cities in the code include Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Burlington, and Fort Madison. The code runs along a long stretch of Iowa's eastern border with Illinois. Northeastern Iowa, including cities such as Davenport and Dubuque, falls under area code 563, which split off from 319 in 2001.
Why did 319 split into a second area code?
Iowa was divided into three area codes when the national numbering plan launched in 1947, and 319 originally covered all of eastern Iowa. By the late 1990s, growing demand from mobile phones, fax machines, and other devices was depleting the available number pool. Administrators chose a geographic split, assigning area code 563 to the northeastern portion of the old 319 region; that split became operational in March 2001.
Does the 319 area code include Cedar Rapids and Iowa City?
Yes. Cedar Rapids and Iowa City are both in area code 319, along with Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Burlington, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, and Oelwein. Northeastern Iowa cities such as Davenport and Dubuque are in area code 563, not 319.
Can I get a 319 number if I am not in Iowa?
Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for Iowa customers from abroad, can take a 319 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.
How much does a 319 business number cost?
The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.
Can I keep my existing 319 number?
Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.
How fast can I get a 319 number set up?
About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 319 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.
Why do I have to dial ten digits for a 319 number?
Ten-digit dialing became mandatory in area code 319 by October 24, 2021. The reason was a conflict with 988, which was designated in 2020 as a nationwide code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline; any area that still allowed seven-digit dialing with a 988 exchange had to make the switch. All calls in and out of 319 now require the full ten digits.
