Got a call from a 616 number? A 616 number was issued in the West Michigan area, covering Grand Rapids, Holland, Grand Haven, and the cities around them. The code does not tell you where the caller is physically located, since internet-based numbers can be answered from anywhere. Area code 616 has been in service since 1947, making it one of the longest-standing codes in the country.
The history
616: one of Michigan's original codes.
Area code 616 was created in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes, initially covering the entire western half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula plus the whole Upper Peninsula. In 1961 the Upper Peninsula was split off and assigned area code 906. In 1999 the northwestern Lower Peninsula, including Traverse City and Cadillac, became area code 231. In 2002 the lower third of the remaining territory, including Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, became area code 269, leaving 616 as the code for Grand Rapids and the core of West Michigan.
Prior to October 2021, 616 permitted seven-digit dialing. When 988 was designated as a national three-digit code for the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, any area code with existing 988 exchanges had to move to ten-digit dialing. Since October 24, 2021, every call within 616 requires ten digits, which means a business should always show the full number, including the area code, on cards, signs, and websites.

What a 616 number does for a small team
A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person HVAC team working out of Grand Rapids, with one 616 number on the truck and the website.
- 7:30 am
A customer calls to book a furnace check. All three phones ring at once in the app, whether the team is in the truck, at the shop, or at home.
- 10:00 am
Two techs are on jobs and the third is under a crawlspace. The call goes to a short queue with hold music, and the first person who frees up answers.
- 10:15 am
A voicemail arrives by email with a recording and a transcript. The message says: 'Call back about the Wyoming install.'
- 5:00 pm
The schedule flips to after-hours mode. An emergency option forwards to the owner's cell, and holidays are already marked on the calendar.
- Any time
Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions
616 area code, answered
Where is the 616 area code?
Area code 616 covers Grand Rapids and the surrounding cities of West Michigan, including Holland, Grand Haven, Greenville, Forest Hills, Kentwood, Walker, and Wyoming. It takes in all of Kent and Ottawa counties and parts of several neighboring counties. The region sits in the western part of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, along and inland from the Lake Michigan shoreline.
How did area code 616 get its current boundaries?
The original 616 territory in 1947 covered the western half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula plus the entire Upper Peninsula. It was reduced in 1961 when the Upper Peninsula became area code 906, again in 1999 when the northwestern Lower Peninsula became area code 231, and again in 2002 when the southwestern portion became area code 269. What remains is the Grand Rapids core of West Michigan.
Does area code 616 include Holland and Grand Haven?
Yes. Holland and Grand Haven are both served by area code 616. Holland sits where Ottawa and Allegan counties meet, and Grand Haven is on the Lake Michigan shoreline in Ottawa County.
Can I get a 616 number if I am not in Michigan?
Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for Michigan customers from abroad, can take a 616 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.
How much does a 616 business number cost?
The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.
Can I keep my existing 616 number?
Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.
How fast can I get a 616 number set up?
About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 616 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.
Why do I have to dial ten digits for 616 calls?
Since October 24, 2021, all calls within area code 616 require ten-digit dialing. The change came because 988 was designated as a national three-digit code for the Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which conflicted with existing 988 exchanges inside 616. Ten-digit dialing removes that conflict.
