636 area code The western suburbs of St. Louis.
Area code 636 covers the western suburbs of St. Louis, taking in Saint Charles, Saint Peters, O'Fallon, Chesterfield, Ballwin, and Wildwood, along with St. Charles, Jefferson, Warren, and most of Franklin counties. It was split from area code 314 in 1999 after the St. Louis area ran short of available numbers; 314 now covers the city core while 636 holds the ring of suburbs to the west. Here is where it reaches, what that means for you, and how a small team gets a 636 number without a Missouri address.

Got a call from a 636 number? A 636 number was issued in the western suburbs of St. Louis, but the caller may be anywhere. Numbers stay with people when they move, so a 636 caller is not necessarily in Missouri. Area code 636 was created in 1999 as a split from 314, so some suburban businesses have held the same number since that transition.
The history
636 split from 314 in 1999.
Missouri entered the North American Numbering Plan in 1947 with two area codes: 314 for the eastern part of the state and 816 for the west. By 1995, subscriber growth pushed 314 close to exhaustion, so planners created area code 573 for most of the state outside the St. Louis metro, effective January 7, 1996. That bought only a few years; cell phones, fax machines, and pagers filled the remaining 314 numbers quickly. On May 22, 1999, 314 was pulled back to the St. Louis city core, and the western suburbs and surrounding counties were moved to the new area code 636.
A permissive dialing period let callers reach the suburban exchanges with either 314 or 636 until February 26, 2000, when 636 became the only code for those areas. For any new business number in the western suburbs today, 636 is the code. Ten-digit dialing is standard throughout the region.

What a 636 number does for a small team
A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person HVAC crew working out of Saint Charles, with one 636 number on the van and the website.
- 7:30 am
A customer calls about a failed furnace. The ring group sends the call to all three phones at once, in the app, in a browser tab, and on the office desk phone. Whoever is free picks up.
- 10:20 am
Both technicians are on jobs and the office line is tied up. The next caller hears hold music and waits in queue. The first person free takes the call.
- 10:25 am
A voicemail arrives by email with the recording and a transcript. The message says: 'Hi, this is the O'Fallon clinic, heat is out.'
- 5:00 pm
The schedule flips to after-hours mode. Emergency calls forward to the owner's cell. Holidays are already marked on the calendar.
- Any time
Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions
636 area code, answered
Where is the 636 area code?
Area code 636 covers the western suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. It includes Saint Charles, Saint Peters, O'Fallon, Chesterfield, Ballwin, and Wildwood, along with St. Charles, Jefferson, Warren, and most of Franklin counties. The St. Louis city core is served by area code 314, directly to the east.
When did area code 636 split from 314?
Area code 636 became effective on May 22, 1999, when the St. Louis area ran out of available numbers in area code 314. During a permissive dialing period, both codes were accepted for the suburban exchanges until February 26, 2000. After that date, 636 became the only code for new numbers in the western suburbs.
Does 636 include Chesterfield?
Yes. Chesterfield is one of the main communities in the 636 area code. Other well-known cities in the code include Saint Charles, Saint Peters, O'Fallon, Ballwin, and Wildwood. The code covers the western suburbs and the counties that fan out from St. Louis to the west and south.
Can I get a 636 number if I am not in Missouri?
Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for Missouri customers from abroad, can take a 636 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.
How much does a 636 business number cost?
The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.
Can I keep my existing 636 number?
Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.
How fast can I get a 636 number set up?
About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 636 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.
Why do I have to dial ten digits for a 636 number?
Missouri has several area codes, and ten-digit dialing ensures calls route to the right one. Area code 636 does not have an overlay, but ten-digit dialing is required statewide. You dial the full 636 prefix before the seven-digit number every time.
