Almost everything between the city and Mountain View is 650: most of San Mateo County, part of San Francisco, and the northwest corner of Santa Clara County, where Palo Alto, Stanford, Los Altos and Mountain View sit. Over the hills, the coast from Pacifica to Pescadero is 650 too.

Why every number here is still a 650
650 was split from 415 on August 2, 1997. Within a year the numbering administrator warned it would run out by 2001, and in April 1999 California approved an overlay for the Peninsula. That December the state suspended every approved overlay, 650's included, and number pooling made the supply last instead.
The one change callers did notice came in 2021. Because 988 became the national crisis line and was also a local prefix here, every call in 650 has taken all ten digits since October 24, 2021. For a business it means one simple thing: a 650 number is the Peninsula's number, with no second code next to it.

650 covers the San Francisco Peninsula: most of San Mateo County, part of San Francisco, and the northwest corner of Santa Clara County.
