818 area code The San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles County.

The 818 area code covers the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, including Burbank, North Glendale, San Fernando, La Cañada Flintridge, Calabasas and Agoura Hills, with a few communities across the line in Ventura County such as Thousand Oaks. It shares all of those towns with 747, an overlay added on May 18, 2009, so a number in either code points to the same area. Here is where it reaches, what 747 means for you, and how a small team gets a 818 number without a California address.

Where it is

Where the 818 area code is

The 818 area code sits in Los Angeles County and reaches a short way into Ventura County. It was cut out of area code 213 in 1984, and it was trimmed in 1997 when most of the San Gabriel Valley moved to 626. Today it is the code for the San Fernando Valley, shared with its 747 overlay.

Got a call from a 818 number? A 818 number tells you where the number was first issued, not where the caller is sitting now. Many businesses and people keep their number when they move or work remotely, and calls can come from a phone, an app or a desk system anywhere. One thing specific to 818: it is the older code, so a newer number in the same area may start with 747 instead.

The overlay

818 or 747? Same towns.

Area code 818 entered service on January 7, 1984, when it was split from 213. On June 14, 1997, 818 was reduced in size and most of the San Gabriel Valley moved to a new code, 626. On April 24, 2008, the California Public Utilities Commission decided that 747 would overlay 818, and the overlay took effect on May 18, 2009. Public sentiment favored an overlay over another split, because 818 customers would keep their code.

Only new service needed the 747 code, so existing 818 numbers did not change. Every local call in the area has to be dialed with the area code and number. For a business, that means a 818 number and a 747 number are equally local, and customers will not read one as more or less local than the other.

In practice

What a 818 number does for a small team

A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person plumbing crew working out of Burbank, with one 818 number on the van and the website.

  1. 7:30 am

The first customer calls the number on the van. All three phones ring at once: one in the app, one in a browser tab at the owner's laptop, and one on a desk phone. Whoever is free picks up.

  2. 11:15 am

All three are on jobs when two more calls come in. The callers go into a queue and hear hold music, and the first person to finish answers the next call in line.

  3. 11:20 am

A caller hangs up before anyone is free and leaves a voicemail. It arrives by email with the recording and a transcript: "Pipe burst in my Calabasas kitchen." The owner reads it and calls back from the van.

  4. 5:00 pm

The schedule flips to after hours. Callers hear the after-hours greeting, and an emergency option forwards to the owner's cell. Holidays are on the calendar, so the same rules apply without anyone changing a setting.

  5. Any time

Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions

818 area code, answered

Where is the 818 area code?

The 818 area code covers the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County in California. It includes towns such as Burbank, San Fernando, Calabasas and Agoura Hills. A few communities in Ventura County, including Thousand Oaks and Oak Park, are in it too. It was created on January 7, 1984, in a split from 213.

Is 747 the same as 818?

They cover the same area. On May 18, 2009, 747 was added as an overlay on top of 818, so both codes serve the same towns. Existing 818 numbers kept their code, and only new service needed 747.

Which towns does the 818 area code cover?

It covers Burbank, North Glendale, San Fernando, La Cañada Flintridge, Calabasas and Agoura Hills, along with Toluca Lake. In Ventura County it reaches Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, North Ranch, Oak Park and Bell Canyon.

Can I get a 818 number if I am not in California?

Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for California customers from abroad, can take a 818 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.

How much does a 818 business number cost?

The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.

Can I keep my existing 818 number?

Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.

How fast can I get a 818 number set up?

About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 818 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.

Do I have to dial ten digits for a 818 number?

Yes. Since the 747 overlay, all calls within the area require the area code and the seven-digit number. A permissive period that still allowed seven-digit dialing began on October 11, 2008, and by mid-April 2009 the full ten digits were required.
