Got a call from a 505 number? An area code identifies where a phone number was issued, not where the person calling you is located. A 505 number means the line was registered in northwestern or central New Mexico, covering cities such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Gallup, and Farmington. The caller could be anywhere in the world.
The history
505: New Mexico's original code, split in 2007.
Area code 505 is one of the original North American area codes, assigned in October 1947 when AT&T established the first nationwide numbering plan. At that time, 505 covered the entire state of New Mexico. On October 7, 2007, the coverage was reduced when the southeastern portion of the state was renumbered as area code 575. The split was decided by the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission in 2006 by a 3-2 vote, with the majority choosing to let the Albuquerque area keep the established 505 code.
Prior to October 2021, area code 505 permitted seven-digit dialing. When 988 was designated nationwide as the dialing code for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in 2020, seven-digit exchanges faced a conflict, and 505 transitioned to mandatory ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021. For any business in the 505 area, that means every call must include the full area code.

What a 505 number does for a small team
A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person plumbing company working out of Albuquerque, with one 505 number on the truck.
- 7:30 am
A customer calls the 505 number; all three phones ring at once in the app, in a browser tab, and on a desk phone. The first person to pick up takes the call.
- 10:00 am
Everyone is on a job. New callers hear a short greeting, then hold music, and the first team member who is free picks up.
- 10:15 am
A voicemail arrives by email with a recording and a transcript. The message says: 'Pipe burst at our Gallup location.'
- 5:00 pm
The schedule flips to after hours. An emergency option forwards to the owner's cell, and holidays are already set on the calendar.
- Any time
Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions
505 area code, answered
Where is the 505 area code?
Area code 505 covers the northwestern and central parts of New Mexico. It includes the Albuquerque metropolitan area, the cities of Gallup and Farmington in the northwest, and the state capital Santa Fe. The southeastern and southern parts of New Mexico use area code 575, which split from 505 in 2007.
Did 505 always cover only part of New Mexico?
No. Area code 505 originally covered the entire state when it was assigned in 1947 as one of the first North American area codes. On October 7, 2007, the southeastern portion of the state was split off and renumbered as area code 575. The New Mexico Public Regulation Commission voted 3-2 to allow the Albuquerque area to keep the 505 code.
Does area code 505 include Albuquerque?
Yes. Albuquerque is the largest city within the 505 area, along with Rio Rancho, South Valley, Santa Fe, Gallup, and Farmington. The code covers the northwestern and central portions of New Mexico.
Can I get a 505 number if I am not in New Mexico?
Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for New Mexico customers from abroad, can take a 505 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.
How much does a 505 business number cost?
The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.
Can I keep my existing 505 number?
Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.
How fast can I get a 505 number set up?
About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 505 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.
Why do I have to dial ten digits for 505 numbers?
Area code 505 switched to mandatory ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021. The change was required because 988 was designated as the national dialing code for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and areas that allowed seven-digit dialing would have had a conflict with that code. Every call to or from a 505 number now requires the full ten-digit format.
