575 area code southern and eastern New Mexico
Area code 575 covers the southern and eastern portions of New Mexico, serving cities including Las Cruces, Roswell, Carlsbad, Clovis, Hobbs, and Alamogordo. The code shares the state with 505, which covers the northwest corner, including Albuquerque and Santa Fe, after a 2007 split reduced 505 to the state's most populated centers. Here is where it reaches, what that means for you, and how a small team gets a 575 number without a New Mexico address.

Got a call from a 575 number? A 575 number means the number was issued in southern or eastern New Mexico, not that the caller is there right now. Numbers can be forwarded, ported, or assigned to internet-based phone services, so the caller could be anywhere. Area code 575 is the last US area code created by a geographic split; every new code added in the country since 2007 has been an overlay.
The history
One state, two codes: how 575 was born.
New Mexico operated as a single numbering plan area under area code 505 from 1947, when AT&T established the first nationwide telephone numbering plan. As demand for numbers grew in the state's most populated areas, regulators reduced 505's territory to the northwest, covering Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Farmington, and Gallup. On October 7, 2007, the rest of New Mexico was renumbered as area code 575. It was the last area code in the United States created by a geographic split; all new codes added in the country since have been overlays.
Prior to October 2021, 575 permitted seven-digit dialing in some exchanges, but the designation of 988 as a nationwide helpline created a conflict with existing numbers. The area code completed its transition to mandatory ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021. For a business, that means always dialing the full ten digits when placing a local call from a 575 number.

What a 575 number does for a small team
A local number is the easy part. What matters is what happens when it rings. Here is one ordinary day for a three-person HVAC crew working out of Roswell, with one 575 number on the truck.
- 7:30 am
The first call comes in and all three phones ring at once - in the app, in a browser tab, and on a desk phone - so whoever is closest picks it up.
- 10:15 am
All three are on jobs. The next caller hears hold music and stays in the queue until the first tech wraps up.
- 10:22 am
A voicemail arrives by email with a recording and a transcript: "Need a quote for Carlsbad today."
- 5:00 pm
The schedule flips to after hours. An emergency option forwards to the owner's cell, and holidays are already blocked on the calendar.
- Any time
Every call shows up in one shared list, and nobody's personal cell number ever reaches a customer.

Questions
575 area code, answered
Where is the 575 area code?
Area code 575 covers southern and eastern New Mexico. Major cities in the code include Las Cruces, Roswell, Carlsbad, Clovis, Hobbs, and Alamogordo. The code was created in 2007 when 505 was reduced to serve the northwest part of the state, including Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
When did 575 split from 505?
The split took effect on October 7, 2007. Before that date, all of New Mexico used area code 505, which was one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947. Area code 575 is the last US area code created by a geographic split; all new codes added in the country since have been overlays.
Does the 575 area code include Las Cruces?
Yes. Las Cruces is among the largest cities in the 575 area code. Other cities in the code include Roswell, Carlsbad, Clovis, Hobbs, and Alamogordo.
Can I get a 575 number if I am not in New Mexico?
Yes. A Tonet number is an internet-based number and is not tied to a street address or a phone line, so a business anywhere in the US, or a team working for New Mexico customers from abroad, can take a 575 number and answer it in the app, in a browser or on a desk phone.
How much does a 575 business number cost?
The number itself is $2.50 a month. Users are $10 a month each on Pay As You Go, plus 1 cent a minute for calls and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month each on Unlimited, with US calls and texts included under a fair-use policy. Billing is by the day, there is no contract, no setup fee and no seat minimum, and $15 gets you started.
Can I keep my existing 575 number?
Yes. Porting a number to Tonet costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, some carriers take a few weeks, and the releasing carrier controls the timing. Your number keeps working with your current provider until the switch, so there is no downtime.
How fast can I get a 575 number set up?
About five minutes. Sign up, add $15, search 575 in the dashboard and pick a number. It rings right away in the app or in a browser tab. A desk phone takes a few more minutes to register.
Why do I need to dial ten digits for a 575 number?
In 2020, the federal government designated 988 as the nationwide dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. This created a conflict for 575 exchanges that had allowed seven-digit dialing, because a seven-digit call starting with 988 might route to the helpline instead. Area code 575 completed its transition to mandatory ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021.
