(984) Area Code Business Phone Numbers
The 984 area code covers Durham, Raleigh, Cary and the rest of the Research Triangle, laid over the older 919 since 2012. If you're starting a business in the Triangle, a 984 number tells people you're local without pretending to have been around for decades.
Get a 984 NumberAbout the 984 Area Code
984 was added as an overlay on top of 919 in 2012 because the Triangle ran out of 919 numbers. If you've lived here for twenty years you probably have a 919, and if you moved here in the last decade there's a good chance you have a 984. Either one is a local Triangle number as far as neighbors are concerned.
Durham sits next to Research Triangle Park, which has grown to around 385 companies and more than 55,000 employees across tech, biotech and pharma[1]. The city itself leans on health care and education, with Duke Health anchoring the hospital system and the universities keeping the professional services crowd busy. Durham County's unemployment rate was around 3.2% in spring 2026, below the national average[2], which means a tight labor market and a lot of small shops competing for attention.
A 984 number signals you're part of the Triangle rather than a call center that bought a toll-free line. People here still screen unknown numbers, and a local area code is the simplest way to get picked up. Tonet lets you grab a 984 in the dashboard the moment you sign up, so you can start handing it out the same afternoon.
Cities Served by the 984 Area Code
The 984 overlay covers the same footprint as 919, running across the Triangle from Durham and Chapel Hill through Cary and the Raleigh suburbs, down to Sanford and east to Goldsboro.
What You Get With a Tonet 984 Number
Every feature comes on both plans. The price difference is just how you pay for calls and texts.
Auto Attendant
Record a greeting and send callers where they need to go. Press 1 for the Durham office, 2 for scheduling, 3 for the owner's cell when it's after hours. Nest as many menus as you want.
Call Recording
Toggle recording on any number, incoming and outgoing. Recordings sit in the dashboard with a transcript next to them, and you set how long they stay before cleanup.
AI Transcription
Recorded calls come back with a searchable transcript and a short factual summary. Voicemails are transcribed too, so you can read a message before deciding whether to call back.
Business SMS
Send and receive SMS and MMS from your 984 number. Receiving works out of the gate; sending needs the one-time 10DLC carrier registration, which you file from the dashboard.
Mobile App
iOS and Android apps use the same login as the dashboard. Answer a Durham customer from a coffee shop on Ninth Street and your 984 number shows as the caller ID, not your personal cell.
Daily Billing
Users are billed by the day against a prepaid balance. Add someone for a two-week project, pay for those days, delete them, and the charge stops. No seat minimums.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pick a specific 984 number?
Yes. In the dashboard you can search available 984 numbers and pick one you like. Numbers cost $2.50 per month each, and they work right after you buy them.
Is a 984 number treated the same as a 919 by locals?
Pretty much. 984 was added as an overlay on 919 in 2012, and both codes cover the same Triangle region. Anyone who moved here in the last decade likely has a 984, so it reads as local.
Can I port my current Triangle number to Tonet?
Yes, and it costs nothing. Most ports complete in 7 to 10 business days, sometimes longer depending on your current carrier. Your number keeps working with your existing provider until the switch, so there's no downtime.
Do I need to be in North Carolina to use a 984 number?
No. You can be anywhere in the world and still use a 984 number for your Triangle business. Calls work in the browser, the mobile app, or on a Yealink or Grandstream desk phone shipped to any address in the continental US.
How much does a 984 line cost per month?
Plans start at $10 per user per month on Pay As You Go, billed daily, plus $2.50 per month for the number itself. No contract, no setup fee, cancel any time. The minimum top-up is $15 to get started.
