US phone number for business

A real US phone number. Yours to keep, from anywhere.

A generator gives you digits that never ring. A temporary number disappears. When customers need to reach you next month too, you need a permanent US number on a phone system you control, wherever you live.

Numbers $2.50 a month. Users from $10. No contract.

Three kinds of US number

Most “US phone numbers” online are not for business

Search for a US phone number and you mostly find generators and throwaway numbers. They answer a different question. Here is what each one is for.

Generator

A made-up number

A website prints digits in the US format.

Good for

Testing that a form accepts a phone number.

Where it stops

Nobody owns it and it does not ring. You cannot call or text from it.

Temporary

A disposable number

A shared or short-lived line that shows incoming texts on a web page.

Good for

A one-off sign-up you never need to repeat.

Where it stops

Other people can read the same messages, and the number is gone when you come back.

Business · what Tonet is

A permanent business number

A US local or toll-free number on a phone system that is yours.

Good for

Customers, clients and leads who need to reach you again next week and next year.

Where it stops

It is a paid VoIP number, so it costs a few dollars a month and needs internet.

Straight answers

What a US business number will not do

  • Bank and app verification codesIt is a VoIP number. US banks and similar services usually refuse to send codes to those, and elsewhere it is case by case. Do not count on it; a US SIM is the dependable route.
  • Send texts on day oneReceiving works right away. Sending needs a one-time carrier registration, which takes a few days to a couple of weeks.
  • Keep calling with an empty balanceWhen the balance reaches zero, outgoing calls and texts stop until you top up. Auto-recharge keeps that from happening.
  • Work without internetCalls run over Wi-Fi or mobile data, in the browser or the app.

Questions

US phone numbers, answered

Can I get a US phone number if I live outside the US?

Yes. Tonet sells real US local and toll-free numbers to businesses anywhere in the world. You need an email address and a card for the $15 starting balance. No US address, US company or US SIM card is needed, and the number works in a web browser or the iOS and Android app wherever you have internet.

Is a number from a US phone number generator real?

No. A generator makes digits in the right format for testing a form. Nobody owns those numbers and they do not ring. A disposable or temporary number is a real line, but it is shared or short-lived, so it is no use for customers who need to reach you again.

How much does a US business phone number cost?

On Tonet a number is $2.50 a month. You also need at least one user: $10 a month on Pay As You Go plus 1 cent a minute and 3 cents a text, or $15 a month on Unlimited for US calls and texts. One person with one number starts at $12.50 a month. Billing is by the day from a prepaid balance, with no contract.

Do I get to keep the number?

Yes. The number stays on your account for as long as you keep the account funded. If the balance runs out, outgoing calls and texts stop until you top up, and a number is only released after a warning period on an account left unfunded for a long time.

My free calling app took my US number back. Why?

A number from a free calling app belongs to the app, not to you, so it goes when the app recycles it or the account closes, along with every client who saved it. A business number sits in an account you control. Keep it in your own account rather than a client's or agency's: if they pay for your seat, the number stays with them when you leave.

Can I call US customers from the Philippines or another country?

Yes. Calling US and Canadian numbers from the Tonet app or browser is billed as a domestic US call wherever you are: 1 cent a minute on Pay As You Go, included on Unlimited. Your customers see your US number.

Will a US business number work for verification codes?

Do not count on it. It is a VoIP number, and US banks and similar services usually refuse to send one-time codes to those; elsewhere it is case by case. If you need codes to arrive reliably, a US SIM is the dependable route. Use the business number for your customers.

Can I text from my US number?

Receiving texts works right away. Sending texts to US numbers needs a one-time carrier registration, filed from the dashboard. Approval takes a few days to a couple of weeks and carries a small monthly carrier fee.
